Birthday Snacks and Treats
All snacks served to students must meet the USDA Smart Snacks in Schools guidelines. This means that you will no longer be able to send in cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, or any other snacks high in sugar or fat for birthdays or any other celebrations. Nonfood items or healthy snacks are recommended. Some nonfood item suggestions are pencils, stickers, erasers, mini notepads, or small toys. Healthy snacks include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Some suggestions are fresh fruits and vegetables, fruit cups with no added sugar, applesauce with no added sugar, nonfat yogurt or Go-Gurt, low fat cheese, and whole grain cereal or crackers. Please remember to send spoons if they are needed. I have found a lot of cute and healthy snack ideas online that the students will love.
